JMS Stain Kit
Jones Methenamine Silver (JMS), also known as Periodic Acid–Silver Methenamine (PASM), is a specialized silver impregnation stain widely used in renal histopathology to demonstrate glomerular and tubular basement membranes. It can also demonstrate certain fungi and other organisms in tissue sections.
- Specifically designed for renal biopsy histopathology

- Useful for evaluating basement-membrane alterations such as thickening, duplication and irregular contours
- Can demonstrate fungal organisms and certain other pathogens
- Suitable for formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue sections
- Silver impregnation produces black to dark-brown target structures
- Includes gold chloride toning to improve contrast and staining stability
- Nuclear counterstain provides a contrasting background for easier microscopic interpretation
- Suitable for routine and specialized renal pathology laboratories.
- Periodic acid first oxidizes carbohydrate-containing components of the basement membrane, generating aldehyde groups. These aldehydes reduce the silver ions present in the alkaline methenamine-silver working solution to visible metallic silver, which deposits on the target structures.
- The silver-impregnated structures are subsequently toned with gold chloride, while sodium thiosulfate removes unreduced silver. A nuclear counterstain provides tissue contrast.

- Excellent basement-membrane definition: Provides sharp visualization of glomerular capillary loops and tubular basement membranes.
- Valuable in renal pathology: Helps demonstrate structural alterations of the glomerular basement membrane in kidney biopsies.
- High contrast: Black silver-positive structures against a contrasting tissue background facilitate microscopic assessment.
- Fungal demonstration: The silver reaction can highlight fungal organisms in appropriate tissue sections.
- Reproducible workflow: A standardized multi-reagent kit reduces the need for individual reagent preparation and helps maintain consistent staining.
- Suitable for routine FFPE sections: Compatible with conventional paraffin-embedded renal biopsy material.
