The PAS reaction is based on carbohydrate chemistry.
- Oxidation: Periodic Acid oxidizes glycol groups in polysaccharides to aldehydes.
- Reaction: Schiff’s Reagent binds to aldehyde and gives a stable Magenta-Pink color.
- Structures rich in carbohydrates – Fungus, Glycogen, Mucin become Magenta.
